What is an F.C.E.?

The Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a series of tests, practices and observations that are combined to objectively assess the extent of a patient’s level of functional capabilities. The exam determines an individual’s ability to perform physically in the work environment by conducting a performance evaluation which are designed to objectively describe a person’s maximum capabilities in relation to:

  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Endurance
  • Coordination

The FCE is normally administered in a few hours over a 1 to 2 day period, the test is composed of a variety of different movements that help the physical therapist gauge the client’s ability to function at work by establishing a baseline. This evaluation is commonly used in return-to-work programs
